DVLA Transfer & Paperwork Guide
Selling a motorcycle or scooter involves more than just handing over the keys. It’s important that ownership is transferred correctly with the DVLA so you are no longer responsible for the vehicle.
At Bike Buyer UK, we make this part simple by handling the DVLA transfer for you as part of our service.
Below is everything you need to know about paperwork and ownership transfer.
What Documents Do I Need To Sell My Motorcycle Or Scooter?
In most cases, you will need:
- V5C logbook (vehicle registration document)
- Valid photo ID
- Any service history or receipts (optional but helpful)
- Spare keys (if available)
If you do not have all documents available, don’t worry — we can still often proceed. Just let us know when requesting your valuation.
What Is The V5C Logbook?
The V5C logbook is the official DVLA document that shows:
- Registered keeper details
- Vehicle registration number
- VIN number
- Make and model information
It is not proof of ownership, but it is required to notify the DVLA when a vehicle is sold.
How Does The DVLA Transfer Work When Selling To Bike Buyer UK?
We complete the DVLA transfer digitally at the time of collection.
This means:
- Ownership change is processed instantly
- You receive confirmation from DVLA
- No paperwork needs to be posted
- No trips to the Post Office
Once the transfer is complete, legal responsibility for the motorcycle or scooter passes to us.
Will I Receive Confirmation From The DVLA?
Yes.
After the ownership transfer is submitted, the DVLA will send you confirmation by email or post depending on your chosen contact method.
This confirms that:
- You are no longer the registered keeper
- Responsibility has been transferred correctly
What If I’ve Lost My V5C Logbook?
If your logbook is missing, we can often still help.
Options include:
- Applying for a replacement V5C (V62 form)
- Using alternative documentation in some cases
- Delaying collection until replacement arrives
Contact our team and we’ll advise the best route based on your situation.
Do I Need To Notify DVLA Myself?
No.
When selling to Bike Buyer UK, we handle the DVLA transfer for you during collection. You do not need to contact DVLA separately.
This removes the risk of:
- Forgetting to notify DVLA
- Being liable for tax or fines
- Receiving parking penalties after sale
What Happens To My Road Tax?
Road tax does not transfer with the vehicle.
Once the DVLA transfer is completed:
- Your road tax is automatically cancelled
- Any remaining full months are refunded to you
- The new keeper is responsible for taxing the vehicle
Refunds are handled directly by the DVLA.
Can I Sell A Motorcycle Without An MOT?
Yes.
You can still sell a motorcycle or scooter without a valid MOT. This will be reflected in the valuation and may affect the price.
We regularly buy:
- MOT failures
- Expired MOT bikes
- Non-running motorcycles
- Project bikes
What About Private Registration Plates?
If your motorcycle has a private registration plate, this can usually be retained.
You will need to:
- Apply to remove the private plate before sale
- Return the bike to its original registration number
If you need help with this process, let us know and we can guide you.
What If The Bike Is Registered At A Different Address?
This is not usually a problem.
As long as:
- You are the registered keeper
- The details on the V5C are correct
- You have the logbook available
We can still proceed with the sale.
Why Correct DVLA Transfer Is Important
Failing to transfer ownership properly can result in:
- Parking fines sent to you
- Speeding penalties
- Insurance complications
- Ongoing tax liability
Our digital transfer process ensures this is handled correctly at the point of sale.
